University of Richmond Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter Awarded Start Farm Grant to Sponsor Two Affordable Housing Advocacy Events

On Friday, October 15, the University of Richmond Habitat for Humanity Chapter hosted “Box Out,” an overnight housing simulation designed to give students an insight into substandard housing. Using cardboard to construct lean-to’s and makeshift shelters, students came together for a night to learn what it is like to live without decent shelter. Students were provided rationing from a “soup kitchen” to simulate the real-life experience of many who face hardship and must depend on the generosity of others to get through their day. Students also received advocacy training, wrote letters to their legislators, and engaged with community leaders to understand more deeply the need for affordable housing advocacy, both here and abroad.
