University of Richmond and RMHFH Build on Partnership in Highland Park

University of Richmond students, faculty, staff and alumni build Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity house in Highland Park neighborhood.

The University of Richmond is partnering with Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity (RMHFH) to build its 2nd Habitat house in Northside Richmond’s Highland Park neighborhood. The home build at 621 E. Brookland Park Blvd is part of The University of Richmond’s Build It program, the school’s largest sustained community-engagement initiative which began in Highland Park in 2005. Build It currently partners with six schools and organizations in Highland Park, providing services such as tutoring, mentoring, technology instruction, health and nutrition education, leadership development and labor for neighborhood redevelopment projects. The program develops long-term, reciprocal community partnerships that create experiential-learning opportunities for students while helping to fulfill unmet needs in the community.

This build has its roots in a long-standing partnership between the University of Richmond and RMHFH, which dates back to 1989 when UR students participated in the first RMHFH home build. In the early 1990’s, the Bonner Scholars Program arose out of this period of student volunteerism and its work with Richmond Habitat. The student-run University of Richmond Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter and the Bonner Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) worked with RMHFH to coordinate the logistics of the build. U. of Richmond students, faculty, staff, and alumni began construction of the new home on February 24, 2010. The new Habitat home in Highland Park is being built to EarthCraft™ standards and will be rated in a variety of energy efficiency categories, including site planning, resource efficient building materials, indoor air quality, water conservation, homeowner education, and waste management.
